I looked in front of me to notice the never ending line at Ingles. Man out of all the days that I just want to get home and stay there, this line will take me all night. I only had a liter of Coca Cola and an extra large bag of white cheddar popcorn. But what the hell I’ll stay; only because I don’t feel like getting off at a gas station to buy this, I just want to go home.

I hadn’t notice I was tapping my foot furiously until the man in front of me turned around and glared at it. I felt bad that I had bothered him, “Sorry,” I murmured. But he only shook his head and turned back around. I tried to entertain myself some other way but nothing caught my eye. Then someone behind me said, “Don’t worry about him he’s just cranky that he has to buy more firewood because someone took his.” I turn around to look up at a guy that looked oddly familiar, I just couldn’t figure out from where.

I was still looking at him trying to figure it out and eventually he noticed that I was struggling. “You don’t remember me?” he said tilting his head to the side.

“Not really, sorry.”

“No it’s okay I wouldn’t expect you to. I was in your Dual Enrollment English Lit class senior year. You’re the girl that moved into town in the winter of that year right?”

“Wow senior year that was three years ago. I know I recognized you from somewhere, it must’ve been that. Yes I am, you remember that?”

“Well I don’t see why not? Anyway how come you’re not buying firewood? It’s supposedly going to snow tonight.”

“I’m sure my parents have some stored away in the basement. What was your name again?”

“Alec, Alec Burks. And your name is Jamie? Janie?”

“Yeah I’m Jamie. Wait weren’t you that guy that wrote that amazing story about the wolves?”

“That was me all right. I can’t believe you’d remember that.”

“Excuse me, sorry to interrupt you but there is no line in front of you, so you can move forward now,” said the lady at the register.

“Oops sorry I wasn’t paying attention,” I said.

“Hey would you like to have coffee sometime? How’s tomorrow sound?” said Alec before I finished paying.

“Tomorrow would be great. I’ll meet you at that little coffee shop next to the high school at around 2?”

“Sounds perfect, see you then.”

As I was about to go out the door and I turn to look at him once again and catch him already looking at me. I flashed a smile and went looking for my car. Home was only a few minutes away but the traffic made it seemed like hours. When I get there I picked up the mail and headed straight to get a class of ice and headed to my room with the popcorn and soda.

It seemed that instead of like any other day where I would think about how horrible my day was between TV commercials, I actually thought of the good things that happened today. I thought about Alec and his short blond hair, his bright smile and how I couldn’t wait for it to be tomorrow already to see him again.

Fire was coursing through her veins,
As gentle kisses softly pecked at her lips.
His fingers ghosted across her skin in teasing patterns.
This was her heaven, her nirvana.
Incoherent moans, arching backs, and whispered murmurs of love.
The window panes are fogged with each breath.
Slowly she rose down from her ecstasy.
A hollow feeling filled her chest.
He exited the bedroom and she was back to being broken again.
Just like everything else in her life.
She was reduced to ashes.
